At first listen you will think this is The Boatman's Call redux, and the general mood of the album is similar to Cave's 1997 collection of ballads. But there's more, something that Nick Cave (God love him) and his music have not been particular devotees of: subtlety. The arrangements are quiet and tied mainly to Cave's piano, and the rest of the instrumentation provides beautiful texture. The mood is somber with the music not as diverse as The Boatman's Call, but this just strengthens the album's focus and heart. It's sad, beautiful, and when you give it time to grow, illuminating.
