Based on an autobiography, this Pre-Code gem is unique because it wears its social conscience on its sleeve (it depicts the Georgia prison system as it was in those years), and it’s long on style. With appropriately dim lighting, efficient montage effects, and fast, cutting dialogue, the movie moves at a clip. Of the early Warner Bros. talkies I have seen, it may be the best one.
